According to the Nicaraguan newspaper La Prensa, the Colonel is the spokesperson in Nicaragua for U.S. President Obama’s spiritual advisor Antonio Bolainez.

Question: What was the Colonel’s involvement in the 1981/82 Mískito Indian massacres, the razing of 66 of their villages on the Coco River, and the internment of survivors in concentration camps? -- the infamous “Red Christmas” massacres. The Nicaraguan Permanent Human Rights Commission is seeking to indict FSLN leaders for those war crimes, citing genocide.

Obama’s spiritual advisor, “Doctor” Bolainez -- who possesses a bogus Doctorate* and specializes in bigoted attacks against the Catholic Church, fails to mention dictator Ortega’s liability for the persecution of conservative religious believers during the 1980's, including Catholics, Evangelicals, Moravians and Jews, 2006 Permanent Human Rights Commission (CPDH) allegations against Ortega regarding the Mískito Indian massacres, Ortega’s murder of an unarmed Costa Rican bank guard during his bank robber days, and the recent rape and incest charges against Ortega. In addition to the FSLN assassinations of more than 200 former Resistance Fighters who laid down their arms under the Peace Accords brokered by the United Nations during the 1990's, none of Ortega's crimes have been brought to justice because of FSLN manipulation of the Nicaraguan justice system. Human Rights organizations have more than 14,000 documented cases of torture, murder, and other serious violations under Ortega and the FSLN.

On the International level, the Sandinistas (FSLN) officially support the banned narco-terrorist FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) and provide political asylum to FARC members fleeing authorities in South America. The Sandinistas charge their own citizens with treason if they publicly criticize the terrorist FARC. According to recent intelligence studies, there is also evidence of FSLN logistical support for suspected Islamic terrorists in the 1993 World Trade Centre bombing -- the first attack on the WTC in New York City and the precursor to 9/11, 2001. Key intelligence documents of the Sandinista Secret Police -- who were trained by the former Communist East German STASI (MfS) -- have been transferred to Cuba in order to avoid judicial investigations into the FSLN's illicit activities.

Nicaragua is a constitutional democracy with a population of approximately 5.4 million. The presidential term of Enrique Bolaños Geyer, who ran as the candidate of the Liberal Constitutionalist Party (PLC), was to expire in January 2007. On November 5, Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) presidential candidate Daniel Ortega was elected in generally free and fair elections and was to assume office on January 10, 2007. While civilian authorities generally maintained effective control of the security forces, there were some cases of human rights abuses reported involving the police. The most significant human rights abuses during the year included harsh prison conditions; widespread corruption and politicization of the judiciary, the Supreme Electoral Council (CSE), and other government organs; harassment and abuse of journalists; ineffectiveness, corruption, and politicization of the Office of Human Rights Ombudsman (PDDH); domestic violence; abuse and exploitation of women; violence against children; widespread child labor; and violation of worker rights in free trade zones.

Section 4 Governmental Attitude Regarding International and Nongovernmental Investigation of Alleged Violations of Human Rights

A wide variety of domestic and international human rights groups generally operated without government restriction, investigating and publishing their findings on human rights cases. Government officials often were cooperative and responsive to their views with some exceptions. The NGO Permanent Human Rights Commission of Nicaragua (CPDH) alleged discrimination by the CSJ and CSE due to CPDH's involvement in a human rights lawsuit brought in June by members of the Miskito indigenous community against several former Sandinista government officials (see section 5). CPDH reported that the CSJ refused to certify Miskito witness testimonies for an October hearing before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) and that the CSE refused to accredit CPDH's electoral observers for the November presidential elections. CPDH reported that police authorities did not investigate anonymous death threats that CPDH staff and their families received throughout the year. The autonomous, government-financed PDDH suffered from financial problems, politicization, and loss of credibility among civil society and was not effective. In March the media produced evidence that Human Rights Ombudsman Omar Cabezas used nearly $3,000 (51,000 cordobas) in PDDH funds to pay his personal assistant's medical bills. In July the comptroller opened an investigation of the PDDH for mismanagement of public funds, but as of year's end the PDDH had not complied with the comptroller's requests for documents. During the year the ombudsman did not publish any reports related to human rights violations.

Indigenous people constituted approximately 5 percent of the country's population and lived primarily in the RAAN and RAAS. The four major identifiable indigenous groups were the Miskito, the Sumo, the Garifuna of Afro-Amerindian origin, and the Rama.

In June CPDH filed a lawsuit with the CSJ on behalf of the Miskito indigenous community. The lawsuit alleged genocide and other serious human rights violations against several former leaders of the Sandinista regime for the Red Christmas operation and related actions taken against the Miskito and other Atlantic Coast communities during the 1980s. Those cited in the complaint included then president Daniel Ortega, his brother and former head of the Sandinista army Humberto Ortega, former Sandinista minister of the interior Tomas Borge, former Sandinista director of state security Lenin Cerna, and Omar Cabezas, former deputy at the Ministry of the Interior and current human rights ombudsman. In October CPDH presented the case before the IACHR (see section 4)

Trinidad and Tobago -- President Obama endured a 50-minute diatribe from socialist Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega that lashed out at a century of what he called terroristic U.S. aggression in Central America and included a rambling denunciation of the U.S.-imposed isolation of Cuba's Communist government.

Obama sat mostly unmoved during the speech but at times jotted notes. The speech was part of the opening ceremonies at the fifth Summit of the Americas here. Later, at a photo opportunity with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Obama held his tongue when asked what he thought about Ortega's speech. "It was 50 minutes long. That's what I thought."

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton ignored two questions about Ortega's speech, instead offering lengthy praise of a cultural performance of dance and song opening the summit. "I thought the cultural performance was fascinating," Clinton said. Asked again about the Ortega speech, Clinton said: "To have those first class Caribbean entertainers on all on one stage and to see how much was done in such a small amount of space, I was overwhelmed."

A senior administration official declined to criticize Ortega, saying the president wanted to focus on the future. "His expectation is that these debates of the past can remain that, debates of the past and that the leaders can take advantage of this opportunity to focus on what they can do in the future to advance the interests of all the people of the hemisphere."

Ortega, meanwhile, droned on about the offenses of the past, dredging up U.S. support of the Somoza regime and the "illegal" war against the Sandinista regime he once led by U.S.-backed Contra rebels in the 1980s. Ortega was a member of the revolutionary junta that drove Anastasio Somoza from power in 1979 and was elected president in 1985 [n.b. Opposition parties did not participate in the 1985 elections due to threats, corruption, etc. R.J.]. He was defeated in 1990 by Violeta Chamorro and ran unsuccessfully twice for the presidency before winning in 2006.

Of the 19th and 20th centuries, Ortega said: "Nicaragua central America, we haven't been shaken since the past century by what have been the expansionist policies, war policies, that even led us in the 1850s, 1855, 1856 to bring Central American people together. We united, with Costa Ricans, with people from Honduras, the people from Guatemala, El Salvador. We all got together, united so we could defeat the expansionist policy of the United States. And after that, after interventions that extended since 1912, all the way up to 1932 and that left, as a result the imposition of that tyranny of the Samoas. Armed, funded, defended by the American leaders." Ortega denounced the U.S.-backed attempt to overthrow Fidel Castro's new Communist government in Cuba in 1961, a history of US racism and what he called suffocating U.S. economic policies in the region.

In his 17-minute address to the summit, Obama departed from his prepared remarks to mildly rebuke Ortega. "To move forward, we cannot let ourselves be prisoners of past disagreements. I'm grateful that President Ortega did not blame me for things that happened when I was three months old. Too often, an opportunity to build a fresh partnership of the Americas has been undermined by stale debates. We've all heard these arguments before."

Actually, the president misspoke on the sequence of events in Cuba. The invasion of CIA-trained rebels at the Bay of Pigs in Cuba occurred in April 1961. Obama was born August 4, 1961.

Ortega's speech, indulgent even by regional standards, also mocked the very summit he was attending and helping to open. "This summit and I simply refuse to call it summit of the Americas. Yes, we are gathered here, we have a large majority of presidents, heads of state of Latin America and the Caribbean," Ortega said, lamenting the lack of Cuban participation in the summit due to it exclusion since 1962 from the Organization of American States. "They're absent from this meeting. One is Cuba, whose crime has been that of fighting for independence, fighting for sovereignty of the peoples. I don't feel comfortable attending this summit. I cannot feel comfortable by being here. I feel ashamed of the fact that I'm participating at this summit with the absence of Cuba."

I came to Canada in 1998 with my husband Guillermo Sambra and our little daughter Yessica. My husband was a prisoner of conscience under the regime of the Castro’s. He was sentenced to 8 years in Prison for distributing flyers that read "Vote for freedom"; "Cuba yes, Castro no"; "No socialism, no death"; "Yes human rights"; " Yes liberty". Thanks to the campaign of Amnesty International, the pressures of Pope John Paul II and the Canadian government, and others, my husband was liberated.

In August 2008 I tried to go back to my homeland Cuba in order to visit my family. I went to the Cuban consulate in Toronto to renew my Cuban passport, which is necessary to enter Cuba, and it does not matter if you have a Canadian passport. You still have to renew it at the cost of $325 Canadian dollars and apply for a "Permit to enter Cuba", which it is a way for the government to control Cubans in exile and let you know that they still have a grip on you.

Personally, I believe that the world is a better place to live in than it was before and every day we’ll have it better, where ideas and points of view can be discussed without the fear of being sent to prison, forced into exile and being denied the happiness of A FAMILY REUNION. I was denied that happiness because I used to be a human rights activist in Cuba and I continue to be an outspoken critic of the regime imposed by the Castro’s for 50 years in my country. The Cuban Government not only continues to rob the money of exiles, but it violates our freedom of dissent by making the “entry permit” to reunite with our loved ones conditional on abandoning dissent. It is the method the Cuban regime is using to silence our voices: BLACKMAIL.

The Cuban consulate in Toronto is very small and uncomfortable, where the many people waiting to be served outnumber the reduced number of chairs. It is difficult to have a private conversation and it is an oppressive environment. A lady who works at the consulate told me that the decision to deny my permit was not their fault because the consulate doesn’t make that decision. I requested to have the reason for the denial to my right to enter my country in writing, and signed by the consul, in the same way that I had put my request to them in writing. It is the least that I could have asked of the representatives of the repression in Cuba.

I am a very proud Cuban, and I have never used violence to express my discontent with the Cuban regime. Why then, have I been denied access to the country I love and the right to reunite with my family?

The Consul General received me in his office and demonstrated his lack of integrity by telling me that Cubans who submit a written retraction, and who renounce their affiliation with anti-Castro exile organizations, are granted the permit. When I informed him that this is in violation of Article 13 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, he responded that “Canada also violates Human Rights”, demonstrating his lack of understanding the significance of the issue. I said to him: “I will never renounce my ideas or stop fighting for democracy and the freedom to associate with people who preach such ideas, even if the right to return to my country and embrace my family is at stake”.

As a woman, I have suffered immensely from repression in my country. My father, my brother, my husband and my father-in-law were put in prison for their oppositional ideas. I am who I am, and for me, despotism is nothing but an expired product that I once suffered under, in a country where a double standard rules and the simplest individual accomplishments depend on what you say or how you act. I rebelled then, and I continue to rebel. My principles and my dignity are my only arsenal against the tyranny and they are not negotiable.

Gracias a la campaña de Amnistía Internacional, a las presiones del Papa Juan Pablo II y al gobierno de Canadá, entre otras, mi esposo fue liberado.
En agosto del 2008 traté de regresar a Cuba para visitar a mi familia. Fui al consulado Cubano en Toronto para renovar mi pasaporte cubano, paso necesario para entrar a Cuba, no importa si se tiene un pasaporte Canadiense. Tuve que pagar 325 dólares y aplicar por un “Permiso de entrada a Cuba”. Esto es una forma de mantener a los cubanos del exilio bajo control y recordarnos que nos tienen en sus manos.
En lo personal, yo creo que el mundo en que vivimos se transforma cada día que pasa en un mundo mejor, donde las ideas y los puntos de vista se pueden discutir sin el temor de ir a prisión o al destierro, sin que te nieguen la satisfacción que produce la REUNIFICACION FAMILIAR. A mí me negaron esa satisfacción, porque yo era en Cuba activista de derechos humanos y sigo siendo una vos de constante crítica al régimen impuesto en mi país por los Castro durante 50 años.
El gobierno cubano no sólo sigue robando el dinero de los exiliados, sino que trata además de frenar nuestra voluntad de disentir condicionándola a la obtención de un “permiso de entrada” a nuestro país para reencontrarnos con nuestros seres queridos. Es la fórmula que ha venido usando para tratar de silenciarnos y esto se llama CHANTAGE.
El consulado cubano en Toronto es muy pequeño y muy incómodo donde muchas veces las personas que esperan ser atendidas sobrepasan el número de asientos disponibles. Apenas se puede hablar con privacidad y se siente un ambiente opresivo. Una mujer del consulado aparece y trata de justificarse y me informa que la negación de mi permiso no es culpa de ellos, que eso no lo decide el consulado. Entonces le pedí que esa negación de permiso me lo informara por escrito y firmado por el cónsul, tal y como yo había hecho por escrito mi solicitud de permiso. Era lo menos que podía exigir a estos representantes de la represión en Cuba.
Yo estoy muy orgullosa de ser cubana y nunca he usado la violencia para expresar mi descontento con el régimen cubano. ¿Por qué entonces me ha sido negado el acceso a mi país adorado y el re-encuentro con mi adorada familia?
El cónsul general me recibió en su oficina y dando muestras de su falta de integridad me dijo que otros cubanos que se han retractado por escrito y han negado su afiliación a las organizaciones anticastristas del exilio, se les ha concedido el permiso. Cuando le dije que esto era una violación del artículo 13 de la Declaración Universal de los Derechos Humanos, me respondió que en Canadá también se violan, mostrando así su falta de sentido de lo que esto significa. Yo nunca –le dije- voy a renunciar a mis ideas ni a dejar de luchar por la democracia y la libertad de reunirme con personas que prediquen tales ideas, aun cuando esté en juego el regreso a mi tierra para abrazar a mi familia. Como mujer he sufrido grandemente la represión en mi país pues mi padre, mi hermano, mi esposo y mi suegro fueron llevados a prisión por sus ideas opositoras. Yo soy quien soy, y para mi, el despotismo no es nada más que un producto vencido bajo el cual alguna vez sufrí, en un país donde la doble moral es un modo de supervivencia y los más mínimos logros individuales están condicionados a lo que dices y a lo que haces. Me rebelé en aquel entonces y sigo rebelde. Mis principios y mi dignidad son mi único arsenal contra la tiranía y esos no son negociables.
